New flight to the belize-mexico Bordertown Chetumal

Today the first American Airlines flight arrived in Chetumal, Mexico, and will make traveling to Belize more affordable.

According to Riviera Maya News, the flight arrived at Chetumal International Airport with 76 passengers aboard. The AA flight, operated by American Eagle, will serve the new route from Miami to Chetumal twice a week, on Wednesdays and on Saturdays.

But not only the southern region of Mexico will profit from this new route, it will make travel to Belize much cheaper. While the price for the flight from Miami to Belize City usually runs between $450 and $650US, you can get the ticket for the round trip flight from Miami to Chetumal currently for $239US!

American Airlines flight Miami to Chetumal

We checked a random date in January and the Wednesday-flight arrives in Chetumal at 12:40pm. Chetumal is a small airport and an about 5-minute drive to the water taxi, so chances are that you can catch the water taxi to Caye Caulker via Ambergris Caye the same afternoon!

The return flight doesn’t leave Chetumal until 2 or 3 in the afternoon, which means a great connection for the return on the water taxi with extra time for a nice lunch in Chetumal.

The city of Chetumal borders the Belize Corozal District and one can enter Belize either at the land border or by water taxi. The land border crossing into Corozal is an about 15-minute taxi ride from Chetumal Airport and once in Belize, it’s an approximately 2.5-hour drive to Belize City.

Since the beginning of COVID that shut down the country, the water taxis haven’t offered the rides between the Cayes and Chetumal, but we presume that they will resume operation for the Chetumal-Belize route in the beginning of next year when the land borders to Belize fully reopen again. Until then, visitors flying into Chetumal must cross the border by land.

The Government of Belize created various COVID safety protocols to ensure the safety of both, visitors and residents.

The current border-crossing process is not difficult, though, and it has been announced to change in the beginning of next year. We will post updates as they become available. Please visit our COVID Travel Info for more information.
