“The Caye Caulker Humane Society was established in August 2009 to address issues of animal health and well being and the negative impact of stray animals on the people of Caye Caulker.
We provide a weekly general veterinary clinic every Saturday from 9 – 11 AM at our facility on Sinsonte Road, on the South side of the village. We also provide surgery clinics as needed where we perform spay and neuter as well as other basic surgical procedures.
While we don’t have a shelter, we do work hard within the community to find both foster and forever homes for dogs and cats in need. Once or twice a year we go in to the community with our “Mobile Vet Clinic” and check on the welfare of, and provide services for, the whole community including families who have trouble bringing their pets to the clinic.
While we do our best to provide basic medical care and respond to emergencies as needed, there are often situations we are unable to respond to either because we lack diagnostic equipment or treatment facilities. In those situations we refer people to veterinary clinics in Belize City or San Pedro.
We are dedicated to providing community education on how to care for animals and we are always happy to answer questions about animal care, health and behavior. We try to respond quickly to inquiries here on our Facebook page, in our community Facebook Group, by email and in person.
The Humane Society is staffed entirely by volunteers, including our wonderful volunteer vet Dr. Zeke Zwerner and young volunteers of the primary and high schools. We provide services on a donation basis and rely on those donations to pay our rent and buy medicine and other supplies.”
