Belize Airport And Flights

Yesterday, at a press conference held in Belize City, the Government of Belize announced that due to a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in three districts, the reopening of the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) will be delayed until further notice.

Prime Minister Rt. Dean Barrow said that although the airport will not reopen, the weekly repatriation flights for Belizean nationals abroad will continue, including the 14-day mandatory quarantine upon arrival.

Belize COVID-19 Updates

The press conference regarding the Belize Airport update was followed by another press conference this afternoon to update on the overall spike of COVID-19 cases and consequences for the country of Belize. As a result, an Emergency Proclamation for the entire country of Belize will go into effect at midnight trying to contain community spread with an even stricter lockdown implemented for the cluster areas Ambergris Caye and areas in Orange Walk.

The Government Of Belize Press Office reported a record number of identified positive cases for one single day. Today, they processed a total of 121 samples.

The breakdown as of today is as follows (this may change as further information is gathered):

  • 1 case in San Ignacio (associated to illegal entry)
  • 1 case in Belmopan (apparent travel to San Pedro)
  • 3 cases in the Northern Region (2 in Santa Marta and one in Orange Walk with link pending to be established)
  • 20 cases in San Pedro (2 related to cluster associated to a church and 10 related to cluster #1, the remaining 8 pending to establish a link to any cluster)
  • 3 in Belize City (2 are linked to San Pedro and one to OW)

One case has recovered which leaves a total of 80 active cases.

“As we move along, consider EVERYONE you meet as a potential COVID-19 CASE and for those who have returned from San Pedro, please remain in isolation and minimize exposure to others,” said the Office of Director of Health Services.
