The Belize Blue Hole Fly-Over Tour

Not a scuba diver?

The most impressive thing right along with diving the famous Belize Blue Hole is flying over it!

cari-bee-air

After the invite to join the flight to the Belize Blue Hole, our CariBee Air pilot met us at the Caye Caulker Airport.

We quickly boarded the Piper PA32-300 Cherokee Six and off we went for the 1-hour flight with stunning views of the Caribbean Ocean.

Beautiful Caye Caulker

Right after take-off, we enjoyed the great view of beautiful Caye Caulker from above.

The Belize Barrier Reef

On the way to the Blue Hole we flew over the Belize Barrier Reef. It is roughly 980 feet (300 meters) offshore in the north and 25 miles (40 kilometers) in the south within the country limits.

The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is the largest reef complex in the Atlantic-Caribbean region and represents the second largest reef system in the world.

The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, is comprised of seven protected areas; Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve, Blue Hole Natural Monument, Half Moon Caye Natural Monument, South Water Caye Marine Reserve, Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve, Laughing Bird Caye National Park and Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve.

Arriving At The Blue Hole

After the about 20-minute flight, we arrived at the Blue Hole. Words cannot describe the view from above!

Best known as a bucket list item for scuba divers, the Great Blue Hole is a large underwater sinkhole just off the coast of Belize. The size is almost 1,000 feet (around 300 meters) across and 410 feet deep (125 meters). The Blue Hole is located between Northern Two Cayes and Half Moon Caye, near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 62 miles (100 kilometers) from the mainland.

The Shipwreck At Lighthouse Atoll

Close to the Blue Hole, on the edge of Lighthouse Atoll, we passed by this shipwreck.

According to Channel 5 Belize, it is a British cargo ship that when it experienced problems crashed into the coral. Only one third of its two hundred and twenty-five foot length sat on the reef, but when Hurricane Emily churned through the Caribbean in 2005, the large waves pushed an additional third of the Transfer into the shallows.

Be on the lookout – in addition to the Blue Hole, the Barrier Reef, the Cayes, and the shipwreck, you can spot all kinds of sea-life in the shallow waters!

And Back To Caye Caulker

After the beautiful 1-hour flight, we returned to Caye Caulker Airport.
