2 Caye Caulker Sisters And The Story Of A Dream Come True
18 years ago, on December 18, 2004, Stacy and Gina Badillo started making their dream come true when Stacy opened their own business at merely 19 years old.
It’s been a long and not easy road to get to what we now know as Purple Passion Studio & Spa.
The hard-working sisters started the business with an idea and never lost sight of their goal. They started from zero, with no outside help nor bank loans in a time when Caye Caulker was more of a fishing village rather than a popular tourist destination.
Stacy went to beauty school in Belmopan, the American School House of Cosmetology, and began her stylist career while working full-time jobs for the first few years. The two single moms needed a steady income, so Stacy worked as a stylist after her regular work hours at her full-time jobs. After one year Gina joined the business and stayed at the salon to schedule Stacy’s appointments. She also started working as manicurist offering mostly pedicures. A few years later, Gina went to school in Mexico to become a certified nail artist and was very successful offering acrylic nails at that time.
As Caye Caulker developed, Stacy started working full-time at the salon in 2015 and the sisters were now fully focused on the business.
Aside from continuous education, Stacy and Gina always reinvested in their business and when the opportunity came along they purchased massage tables before they even knew how to give massages. The sisters then went to the Holistic School of Massage on the mainland for a few months, so not only did they have to pay for the school, but also for the boat rides and transportation.
The investment paid off. The spa section opened on June 11, 2011 and is now 11 years old.
Determined to advance and learn more, Stacy received a scholarship from the U.S. Embassy and went to Thunderbird School of Global Management in 2018, a program in Guatemala, which made her think about her business and helped with ideas of what value to add to their services.
That’s when they added their amazing products to enhance customer experience and complement the body scrub that they’d been using at the spa. Clients should be able to purchase and use the products on a regular basis at home.
The plan was to launch their products in the beginning of 2020 when Covid all of the sudden put a stop to the official launch. Always creative, and partly because of their own skin problems, they started creating a hand sanitizer that everybody loved. They also sold hair-coloring kits, nail kits, etc., so clients could take care of themselves at home while the salon had to stay closed during the pandemic.
By now their products include massage oils, facial oils, body scrub, and more.
In the beginning, they had a hard time to keep up with the demand as most packaging has to be imported from the U.S. Refill bottle specials solved some of that problem and supported their goal of being more environmentally friendly.
At that point, the sisters’ sustainability journey just started. Now the business fully operates on solar power, and a rainwater catchment system is in process to be installed.
In addition, they are waiting for the delivery of their new eco-friendly and reusable packaging material for all of their products.
A lot of hard work and determination, consistent quality service, and not giving up despite all the sisters were up against over the years. has led Stacy and Gina to own the well established business Purple Passion Studio & Spa on Caye Caulker.
We are happy to have such a nice beauty salon and spa in the island and we wish Stacy and Gina all the best for their 18th Business Anniversary!
We can’t wait to see what the two sisters have in store for us for the next 18 years!
